José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal (often pronounced [xo?se ?peð?o ?alma?seða pas?kal] in Spanish; born on April 2, 1975) is Chilean and American actor. After nearly two decades of small roles in both theater and TV, Pascal had his breakout role as Oberyn Martell in the fourth installment of the HBO hit fantasy series *Game of Thrones* (in 2014). He further rose to fame by playing his portrayal of Javier Peña in the Netflix crime drama *Narcos* (between 2015 and 2017). He went on to appear in the movies *The Great Wall* (2016), *Kingsman: The Golden Circle* (2017), *The Equalizer 2* (2018), and *Triple Frontier* (2019).
His starring roles as Din Djarin in the Disney+ science fiction series The Mandalorian (since 2019) and Joel in the HBO post-apocalyptic series *The Last of Us* (from 2023 onward) led to his global fame, and earned him a reputation for portraying adoptive father figures. For the latter role, he earned many awards, including a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe nomination. He extended his roles as parental figures in the movies such as *We Can Be Heroes* (released in 2020), *Strange Way of Life* (in 2023), and playing Fink the fox in *The Wild Robot* (scheduled for 2024). Pascal also appeared in major films such as *Wonder Woman 1984* (2020) and *Gladiator II* (2024).
Involved in theater since 1999, he debuted on Broadway as Edmund in a 2019 Broadway rendition of *King Lear*. Time magazine named him one of the most influential people of 2023 by Time magazine in 2023.
